Everything you’ll ever need to know about micro-needling!

Let’s think of our skin in terms of a house:  you’ve got to build the foundation before you paint the house, right? Making sure your skin is healthy and has a good foundation should be your first step. So before we head to the makeup counter and injection chair, let’s get your skin healthy. And one of the best ways to do that is micro-needling. Micro-needling uses tiny needles to puncture the skin and cause intentional micro-damage. It sounds scary, I know. Why would I want to intentionally damage my skin?? The answer is actually pretty simple. Anytime your skin is damaged, the healing process is triggered. Through this intentional damage, we are literally building new skin. And who doesn’t want that?

Unlike many other treatments, micro-needling is a treatment that literally anyone can receive, regardless of skin type, color, and age. Dark, light, dry, oily, young, old, everyone is a candidate for micro-needling. Remember, it’s much easier to prevent than to correct. Think of your skin in 10 years when thinking of which treatments will work best for you in the long run.

The micro-damage caused by those tiny needles stimulates collagen production and cell turnover. Collagen gives the skin that youthful appearance we all crave, while also boosting the skin’s ability to retain moisture, keeping it firm and supple. By increasing your skin’s cell turnover rate, you’re allowing for newer, “fresher” looking skin to shine through!  Micro-needling can also help fight off acne. Now while it is not considered an acne treatment, it will physically make your pores smaller (it’s one of the only treatments that actually do this!), making it harder for that bacteria/infection to get into those pores and create acne. Speaking of acne, this treatment is PERFECT for acne scarring! In my opinion, nothing will get rid of that left over scarring like micro-needling will. Another (and probably the most sought after) benefit is the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. That’s right, you can get rid of those pesky fine lines and wrinkles without jumping straight to injections!  That collagen that we’re stimulating will wake up tired skin and fill in those lines. Keep in mind this treatment is great for fine lines, so just make sure to have realistic expectations about lines and wrinkles. On top of all of these benefits, one that not many people consider is that micro-needling can actually improve how well your at-home products work by helping products penetrate deeper into the skin. Deeper penetration means better results.

“How bad does it hurt?” is THE most common question I get asked about micro-needling. I mean, you’re running needles all over my face; surely it’s going to be pretty painful, right? Well, I’m here to (happily) tell you no! Micro-needling is actually very comfortable. We use a numbing cream comprised of Benzocaine, Lidocaine, and Tetracaine. Some spots are just more sensitive than others, usually right along the hairline on the forehead but even that area is bearable.

Another question I get asked a lot is how long it will take and what the downtime is. When you come in for your appointment, we’ll cleanse your skin and apply the numbing cream. It takes 30 minutes to get you all numbed up before we start the actual treatment. Once we get that cream off, the procedure takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes. From the time you walk in until the time you leave, you’ll be with us for about an hour and fifteen minutes! Not too shabby, huh? The total downtime is about 5 days. When you leave, your skin is going to be red. It will look more like a sunburn than a lobster, so most people can go straight back to work if needed. You’ll need to refrain from wearing makeup for 24 hours at minimum, but the longer, the better. After the redness has subsided (it usually lasts a day or two), some mild flaking/peeling is pretty common. Just remember DO NOT PICK!! Picking at the loose skin can lead to scarring and we don’t want to scar up that beautiful skin! This usually starts on day 3 and typically ends around day 5.

After-care products:

Products you will absolutely 100% need are a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunblock (there are some serums that will help speed the recovery time and improve your results, but these are optional). The most important product of your after-care is sunblock and making sure it has the right ingredients in it. I cannot stress this part enough. Your skin is going to be sensitive and new so all the damage you normally get will be that much worse. Seriously, don’t go without the sunblock! You also need to make sure your sunblock has physical protection in it, not just chemical. Sunblocks that contain Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide provide that physical protection your skin needs. Those ingredients reflect UV rays: when the sun hits your skin, it bounces off of it, lessening the damage. You should incorporate these types of sunblock into your everyday life as well, not just after a treatment. This will really help maintain your results and keep your skin looking and feeling youthful. Okay, okay, I’m done with my sunblock rant. Let’s get back to your other products. Make sure whatever cleanser you’re using is gentle. Nothing with those microbeads and absolutely no exfoliating washes! The moisturizer you use needs to have hyaluronic acid in it. This nifty little acid is naturally made by your skin and holds 1,000 times its weight in water. Trust me; you’re going to want that. We offer a post-procedure kit that contains everything you’ll need to rebuild your skin, including those optional serums I mentioned earlier. Let’s talk about those real quick. SHEALD Recovery Balm is a client favorite! This balm reduces redness and discomfort, relieves itching and tightness, prevents scabbing, and helps speed the healing process. Pro-Heal Serum helps heal the skin from any damage, whether it’s UV damage or intentional damage, like with micro-needling. Hydra-Cool Serum hydrates and calms the skin. This product contains 25% hyaluronic acid and provides antioxidant protection.
